Do You Still Possess a Rs 2,000 Bill? The RBI Outlines a Detailed Procedure, Stating Over 98 Percent of Notes Have Been Returned

No Need to Worry About Your Rs 2,000 Note

If you possess a Rs 2,000 note, there’s no cause for alarm. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has confirmed that 98.26% of the Rs 2,000 notes have already been returned to the central bank. However, it was also clarified that these notes remain legal tender.

The Situation with Rs 2,000 Notes

The RBI reported that, as of May 31, 2025, the total amount of Rs 2,000 notes still in circulation is valued at Rs 6,181 crore. An order for the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes was issued by the Reserve Bank on May 19, 2023, when the overall value of these notes stood at Rs 3.56 lakh crore. The central bank has set a deadline of October 7, 2023, for the exchange or deposit of these notes at all bank branches.

How to Exchange Your Rs 2,000 Notes

To facilitate the exchange of Rs 2,000 notes, the RBI has provided specific guidelines. Deposits can be made at 19 designated Issue Offices located in major cities such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

In Case You Can’t Visit an Office

If an individual is unable to visit an Issue Office personally, they have the option to mail their Rs 2,000 notes to any of these locations through Indian Post. The exchanged amount will then be transferred to the individual’s bank account.
