NITI CEO Announces Unveiling of National Manufacturing Mission in One Month
India Set to Introduce National Manufacturing Mission to Boost GDP Share
India is gearing up to launch the National Manufacturing Mission in the next month with the aim of increasing the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP to 25%, announced NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam. The mission will establish a strong body to lead reforms, enhance competitiveness, and leverage global supply chain shifts.
According to Subrahmanyam, the National Manufacturing Mission, slated for unveiling within a month, will include a dedicated body with strong enforcement capabilities to tackle emerging challenges promptly and elevate India’s manufacturing industry. The Union Budget FY26 introduced the National Manufacturing Mission to support businesses of all sizes under the Make-in-India initiative, striving to boost the manufacturing sector’s GDP share from the current 15–17% to 25%.
During an event organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Subrahmanyam emphasized the need for a powerful body to drive manufacturing transformation, similar to what China did to boost its manufacturing sector. He highlighted the opportunities arising from geopolitical uncertainties and stressed the importance of focusing on winning sectors to enhance India’s competitiveness globally.
The proposed overarching body under the National Manufacturing Mission will hold the authority to issue directives, maintain control, and ensure effective implementation of policies. Subrahmanyam mentioned that the finalization of the structure is in the advanced stages, and an announcement could be expected within a month. He underscored the significance of manufacturing transformation in transitioning people from agriculture and positioning India as a developed nation.
Currently, the majority of manufacturing activities are concentrated in a few states, with China strategically positioning itself at the center of global supply chains. Subrahmanyam questioned whether India should also aim to become a crucial player in global supply chains.
